The Durham Miners

From our research we have ascertained that when mines were closed in County Durham during 1963 miners re-located to Hamstead and the Durham estate off West Road was built to house the miners and their families. This must have been a major upheaval for these families who would have been devastated when the Hamstead mine was closed only two years later. Whilst some miners returned to County Durham many remained in Hamstead.
