To facilatte the transport of coal a wharf was operated at the top of Hamstead Hill. This was connected to the colliery about 0.8 miles away by a tramway (shown as blue line on map) This avoided having to try bringing the coal up the steep Hamstead Hill.

The Wharf was located just below what is now Vernon Avenue.
