The Birmingham Daily Gazette of 9th July 1903 carried the story that he wives of James and John , Elizabeth Taylor and her four childrenĀ of Newcombe Road Handsworth and Phoebe Hannah Flavell of Havlock Terrace, Loise Road, Handsworth had gone to court to claim compensation from the Hamstead Colliery Company for the deaths of their husbands. The claim was unsucessful as they had already received compensation under a separate Mining accident fund.
